Summer Bridge

Greetings and Welcome!

Greetings and welcome to the start of a new and exciting year!  You are not only transitioning to high school, but also to college.  The purpose of Summer Bridge is to make that transition as smooth as possible.  In an effort to do so, we have prepared various types of content in order to meet the needs of our students.

What can students and parents expect?

  • Upon arrival on the first day, students will be divided into groups of about 20 and escorted to their first "class" of the day by our 12th grade helpers.  This is where they will meet each morning of Summer Bridge.
  • If you have never been to the LIT campus, it would be advisable to do a practice drop-off/pick-up route BEFORE the first day of Summer Bridge.
  • Students will transition to a new room, with a different teacher, and a new topic each hour or so.
  • We have six teachers covering a range of topics including TSIA2 Math, TSIA2 Reading, TSIA2 Writing, general online etiquette for high school and college, orientation to the Google Suite of products, introduction to LIT online learning platform (Blackboard), a general King Collegiate Academy orientation, proper use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in high school and college, how to avoid Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism, and so much more!
  • Students will break for lunch around 11:00 each day.  They will have 30 minutes to eat and 30 minutes of team-building activities with our 12th grade student leaders.
  • Students should dress appropriately and within BISD dress code.  Be sure to bring a light jackets for the rooms that are cold.  Wear comfortable shoes - there will be multiple transitions from one room to another and across campus.  Review the dress code here - https://www.bmtisd.com/family/back-to-school
  • Students will be dismissed promptly at 3:00 PM and will meet their rides in the same spot where they were dropped off.
  • NOTE - Students should bring plenty to drink and a lunch each day.  Drinks and food will not be provided by KCA or LIT staff and food deliveries will not be accepted.

Summer Bridge Schedule and Details

What: Summer Bridge is a two-week orientation where new Owls will be officially introduced into the King Collegiate Academy (KCA) family.  The goal of Summer Bridge is to "bridge" the gap between middle school and high school.  Students will participate in orientation sessions and receive tutorials in preparation for the LIT placement exam (TSIA2), which is a requirement before students can enroll in certain LIT classes.

When: July 21 - August 1, 2025

Time: 8 AM - 3 PM

Where: Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) located at 855 E. Lavaca St.  Drop students off at the main entrance (the horseshoe drive at the flags).  Parents do not need to walk their students in or sign them in and out each day.  Students will be picked up at the same location.

Transportation: Parents will need to drop off and pick up their students promptly.  Transportation will not be provided.

Lunch: Bring a sack lunch, snacks, and plenty of water.  Meals will not be provided and drop offs will not be accepted.  On the first day of Summer Bridge, students will receive more details about which two days they have the option to bring money to eat on Lamar University's campus.

What to bring: Students do not need to bring anything other than their lunch and a drink since materials will be provided on site.  If, however, they want to bring their own materials, students may bring a clear or mesh backpack, something to write with, and something to write on.

Highlights:  Meet fellow classmates, prepare for the TSIA2, learn about clubs and organizations, get your LIT badge, and so much more!

IMPORTANT: Students must memorize their social security number in order to access their accounts with LIT.  If your student does not have a social security number or if the card/number cannot be found, LIT will be able to work around that.

KCA Running Start:  This will take place on July 31, 2025, during the day.  Students that are scheduled to take TSIA2 (those schedules will be issued during the first week of Summer Bridge) on that day will only be testing in the morning.  They will be able to attend Running Start opposite that time.  All other students will be able to attend at any point in the day.  Parent/Guardian attendance is required.  All information regarding tasks for Running Start can be found on our website.  Bring cash or credit card for a class shirt, other spirit items, or other items that the clubs and organizations may be selling.

**Please note: While attending KCA Summer Bridge, the BISD Code of Conduct, including dress code and cell phone/electronic device policies, will be enforced.  Cell phones and other electronic devices may not be in use while attending Summer Bridge.  Expect all students to use the Yondr pouch while in attendance.  Daily activities begin promptly at 8 AM and end at 3 PM.  All incoming 9th graders are expected to attend.  Once students arrive, they are to remain until 3 PM.  Supervision will not be provided before 7:45 AM or after 3:15 PM.  Students may only be picked up by parents/guardians, emergency contacts, or another person listed on the form that was provided at Interview Night.

Signing Night: This event brings the two week Summer Bridge program to a close with a final ceremony in which students sign for their scholarship from LIT and commit to the requirements of the program.  The event will take place at LIT's Multipurpose building on August 1.  Due to space constraints, there will be two sessions and further details will be communicated at the start of Summer Bridge.
