Exemptions
The exemption guidelines are designed to increase high achievement, improve attendance, and promote student awareness of personal responsibility and behavior. Every student, in grades 9-12, has an opportunity to earn four exemptions per semester. Students may earn an exemption for any or all of the following:
- Perfect attendance for the semester (see exceptions below).
- No tardies for the semester.
- No discipline that results in In-School suspension for the semester.
- No discipline that results in Out-of-School suspension for the semester
The student must be cleared from the Hold/Debt List for the semester. Student attendance issues must be corrected three weeks before the end of the semester. Students can use an earned exemption in any class with a semester average higher than 79.5 and no more than 3 absences.
All absences (excused or unexcused), including illness, count in the exemption guidelines, with the following exceptions:
- College Day visits with the campus verification form
- Military Enlistment
- Religious Holidays
- Citizenship Proceedings
- Partial-day medical and dental appointments WITH documentation from a physician
- Absences for school-sponsored student activities
- Absences coded On-campus Out of Class (OOC)
Any student who qualifies for an exemption has the option to take the semester exam without fear of lowering their final average. The numerical average for the two nine-week periods will be the semester grade if the student is exempt and does not take a semester exam. The semester exam will count for 20% of the final semester grade.
Any non-exempt student who does not take an exam will receive a grade of 10 and be required to take the exam no more than 5 school days after the initial exam date.
**Exemption guidelines do not apply to dual-credit classes, College Bridge, College Board National AP exams, Industry Based Certification (IBC) exams, and/or Texas Success Initiative Assessment TSIA.**
